FRNCH-211 Reading in French I: Fashioning Identity: Dress, Culture, and Society

This course explores identity formation in French and Francophone literature. We will examine how social identities are shaped by physical and social environments, aesthetic and personal expression and cultural ideals. Reading across genres (poetry, novel, theater, BD) and across historical periods, we will learn how to think and write critically about literature in its cultural contexts using various techniques and methodologies of textual analysis. Authors include Balzac, Baudelaire, Colette, Duras, Djebar, Chamoiseau, Condé, among others. Course will include possible off-campus visit.
