ARTH-303 Architecture and Race
This course explores the intersections of race, racial theory, and architecture from the eighteenth century to the present. We will focus primarily on the construction of race in the material, discursive, and experiential aspects of the built environment by deconstructing the canon from within. Topics include racialized spatial practices such as designing, zoning, extracting, occupying, and memorializing. Students will connect theory and history to present-day social problems through a digital final project that analyzes the relationship between architecture and race in the Utica area.
