ARTH-218 The Social Life of Prints

The array of functions exhibited by printed works in Western visual culture is remarkable: prints served, among other things, as a form of mass communication; as scientific records of the natural world; and as an affordable imitation of paintings. More broadly, prints stimulated the visual and critical skills necessary to negotiate cultures that were increasingly saturated by images. As such, particular attention will be paid to the technologies of the print medium, to the relationships between making and meaning, and to the critical value of prints for the interpretation of images in general.
