AFRST-276 Cold War in Africa

Examines the options and obstacles facing diverse regions of Africa during the Cold War. Covers the period from World War II until the 2000s. Topics include Africa and Africans during WWII, decolonization, the Non-Aligned Movement, China and Cuba in Africa, proxy conflicts, and links between the Cold War and the War on Terror. Discusses the legacies of the Cold War for contemporary Africa. Course focuses on engaging with primary sources including film, literature, propaganda, and music.
