AIIS-310 Where Tradition Meets Modernity: Emergent Indigeneity
This class will explore Emergent Indigeneity: how Indigenous identity is a dynamic and continually evolving process of redefining and making that rejects fixed notions of “purity” or “authenticity.” We will look at the ways modern American Indian and First Nations artists draw upon traditional practices, materials, and cosmologies within their tribally-specific knowledge systems, but use modern technologies, methods, and materials to communicate what it means to be Indigenous in the late 20th and early 21st century. For example, we might look at how Native writers redefine a literary genre drawing on specific Indigenous knowledge systems, how some Indigenous pop-music artists sample traditional songs, or how TV writers represent cultural practices in a modern context. Will include literature, film, TV, music, social media, and material culture, as well as beadwork, performance art, and modern art.
